POP stands for Post Office Protocol. The current version is v3... therefore also known as POP3.

This kind of email allows you to download your email from your post box on a server somewhere on the internet onto your own computer using packages such as Outlook Express for example.

Below are some advantages and disadvantages to using this type of email...

Advantages

You can store your email on your own computer.

You can read and write your email without having to be online.

Because only have access to your mailbox from you own computer, it has good security.

You are less bombarded with loads of advertising (spam) rubbish.

All POP mail clients support attachments.

Disadvantages

If you don't have your own PC, then you might have nowhere to read your email!

Generally you only have access to your mailbox from your own computer.

It's difficult to change your email address if you need to.

If you are lucky, some ISPs allow both services, allowing you to look at your incoming mail using your browser, then using POP to download it onto your own computer.
