E-mail

Electronic Mail. A method of electronic communication rather like sending letters but across computer systems.

E-commerce

Electronic Commerce. A system of allowing internet users to perform business online. For example, a web site allowing people to buy a specific product without actually having to visit a shop.

Ethernet

A style of LAN that was developed by Xerox in 1976 and now the most popular choice with enthusiasts and companies alike, having greater reliability than Token Ring. Ethernet uses either coaxial cable (like a TV Aerial cable) or short cables with connectors that look like telephone plugs on the end. This style of cabling requires all PCs to be plugged into a central 'hub' for the network to function correctly.

Ethernet Card

A hardware device which plugs into a PC or laptop to allow it to connect to a network.

Extranet

The same principle as an Intranet, where company information is distributed internally by means of a Web browser, but for business partners who are external to the company.
