Why does disk space come into the computer health section? Every operating system and application needs free disk space to operate, without this disk space your operating system will grind to a halt.

Windows itself need space for temporary files, including space for the memory swap file to grow. This file allows you to operate more applications seamlessly as it swaps data from the hard disk swap file to it's memory.

Such things like Internet Explorer will create lots of temporary files which makes up the web pages you view in the browser. Installing software, will create temporary create files as part of the install process.

When you edit documents, the word processor will store histories of changes you've made.

There are many things which will use disk space, most of the time the space is reclaimed. Occasionally the files are left to waste space. Having plenty of disk space to accommodate this ongoing requirement is important to maintain a stable operating system.

There is a utility built into most versions of Windows which handles some of this, called Disk Cleanup.
