I can hear the modem dialling but then it
hangs up
|
|
|
| |
Reason
|
| |
There are two reasons why this may happen: either
the modem is not plugged into the telephone socket
correctly, or the number you are trying to dial
is engaged.
|
| |
Resolution
|
| |
To resolve the problem, ensure the modem is plugged
into it's telephone socket correctly. If this
is the case then ensure that the number you are
dialling is correct, and try again. If it still
does not work, check to see if there are any alternative
numbers you can try, and try again.

The modem dials and connects, but then an
error message similar to "check your password"
appears
|
|
|
| |
Reason
|
| |
This is normally because as the message suggests,
you are not using the correct password. This can
be because the password is case-sensitive, meaning
that a lower case 'c' is treated differently to
an upper case 'C'. It can also be because the
wrong username is being used - net.surfer is different
to net_surfer.
|
| |
Resolution
|
| |
To resolve the problem, ensure you are using
the correct password and the correct case - a
common problem is that the caps lock key is selected
when typing your password. If this is not the
case, then check your username is correct, again
checking the case of the letters.

After a certain amount of time, I am disconnected
from the Internet
|
|
|
| |
Reason
|
| |
This
is normally down to a setting in the dial-up networking
section, which decides to disconnect after a certain
amount of inactive time. It can also be due to
a setting at the other end of the connection,
usually an ISP which disconnects you after a certain
amount of time of being connected, particularly
if the phone calls are free.
|
| |
Resolution
|
| |
To
resolve the problem, check the section on Onlinehelp
for setting up your modem and Dial-up Networking
icon. If this is ok, then it could be the settings
with the ISP, which unfortunately you will not
be able to change.

My modem connects, but takes a long time for
Dial-up Networking to disappear
|
|
|
| |
Reason
|
| |
This
is sometimes caused by a setting in the TCP/IP
section of Dial-up netorking which says "log on
to network". Generally this is not needed for
ISPs.
|
| |
Resolution
|
| |
To
resolve this problem, remove the tick from 'log
on to network' in the Dial-up Networking settings.
Refer to the Onlinehelp pages on setting up your
modem and Dial-up Networking icon.

My modem connects, but using the Internet
and checking my mail is very slow
|
|
|
| |
Reason
|
| |
If
this is a common problem then it could be down
to the connection speed settings in your modem
configuration, where the value is set too low.
It could also be the recieve buffer setting being
set too low. If this is an intermittent problem,
then it could just be that your ISP is very busy,
or that you have a noisy telephone line.
|
| |
Resolution
|
| |
To
resolve this problem, refer to the Onlinehelp
section for setting up your modem, making sure
you know what speed your modem is capable of.
To correct a noisy line, contact your telecoms
supplier, such as BT or Telewest. Unfortunately
you cannot change whether an ISP is busy or not.

I am trying to dial out from my office phone,
but it doesn't work
|
|
|
| |
Reason
|
| |
The
main thing to find out is whether you need to
dial an extra digit to get an outside line, such
as 9. Also, you need to find out whether you have
to wait having dialled the extra digit for another
dial tone before dialling the actual number.
|
| |
Resolution
|
| |
To
dial an extra digit when in the office, type the
extra number in the number field before trying
to connect. For a pause, if you have to wait for
another dial tone, then use a comma (,).
