1.

I get the error message '404 Not Found'

Goto the top

Reason

This error message occurs when a server on the Internet cannot find the page that you have requested.  Unless the pages you are looking at belong to you, there is nothing that can actually be done to resolve the problem, short of e-mailing the owner or webmaster of the pages and telling them which one doesn't work.

Resolution

If the pages do belong to you, then ensure that all the links point to files which definitely exist, checking the spelling of the filename including capitals and file extension (*.htm is different to *.html)

2.

A page I use all the time doesn't seem to exist any more

Goto the top

Reason

Like the last problem, this is a fault which you have no control over, unless the pages are owned and written by you.  This error occurs when pages have been deleted from the Web Server, possibly because they are just about to be updated or they are erroneous. There could also be a fault with the server that the pages are coming from - it could have crashed or be in the middle of a reboot for example.

Resolution

There is no real resolution for this, apart from ensuring that you are using the correct address and to keep reloading the pages.

3.

A page I am trying to access is asking for a username and password

Goto the top

Reason

You are trying to access a restricted part of a website.  If you have permission to use this part, and have been given a username and/or password, then type the details into the box and click on OK.  If you do not have permission to use this part, or do not have your username and/or password, then you will be unable to access the pages.

Resolution

If you are supposed to have permission to the protected part of the website, mail the webmaster of the site informing them you are having problems gaining access.  They will be able to help you further.

4.

A page I am accessing comes up with "JavaScript" errors

Goto the top

Reason

This again is something that is server related and cannot be fixed by someone who is just browsing.  The person who has written the pages has made a mistake in the programming of the JavaScript, which is why the browser informs you of the errors.  Sometimes the browser can warn of errors when none exist, because the temporary file cache is full.

Resolution

Firstly delete the temporary internet files (also known as the cache).  If this does not make any difference, then the problem is with the server.  Try accessing the page later on to see if the problem has been resolved.

5.

I want to delete IE4 and install IE5 instead

Goto the top

Reason

As IE is very much a part of Windows 98 and features quite heavily in all other Microsoft Windows products, you cannot completely delete a version of IE. However, if you just want to upgrade to IE5, then you can do this, and it will remove IE4 for you!

Resolution

The best thing to do is to go to the newsagents and buy a PC Magazine which has a Cover-CD on the front. Examples are .net magazine and PC Plus. Ensuring they have Internet Explorer on them, buy the CD and then when you are at your PC just pop it into the machine. The CD should autostart, and then you will be able to follow the prompts to find IE and install it on your machine. If you are using Windows 98 then you can also make use of Windows Update, which you will find at the top of the Start Button on your desktop. However, the download for IE5 is very large, and could take up to a day to download depending on the options you select and the speed of the modem, which obviously might cost quite a bit!

6.

On installing a new version of IE, I have lost a lot of features, like my Active Desktop

Goto the top

Reason

The chances are that the updated versions of Active Desktop and the shortcut bar on the 'start bar' were not installed when you set up the new version of IE.

Resolution

If you installed IE from a Cover CD, put it back in the machine and re-run the setup program, and make sure that all the features that you want to use are selected, as many special features aren't selected as standard.

7.

I want to change the spinning logo in the top right of Internet Explorer for one my friend has given me

Goto the top

Reason

The spinning logo in Internet Explorer is actually just a collection of images added together to make the whole animation. The file itself (assuming you have installed IE in c:\program files\internet explorer) lives in c:\program files\internet explorer\signup.

Resolution

To change the logo, firsly copy the one that is in there (if there is one) to another place for safe keeping, and then put the new files in that folder. IE should find them and use those instead.

8.

When I start IE it comes up with an error message saying "Internet Explorer cannot open the file specified"

Goto the top

Reason

A default page has been specified for IE to use when it starts, and that file has been moved, renamed or deleted.

Resolution

In IE4, choose Edit -> Preferences, and then change the Home Page setting to about:blank.
In IE5, choose Tools -> Internet Options, and then change the Home Page setting to about:blank .
