1.

I get the error message '404 Not Found'

Goto the top

Reason

This error message occurs when a server on the Internet cannot find the page that you have requested.  Unless the pages you are looking at belong to you, there is nothing that can actually be done to resolve the problem, short of e-mailing the owner or webmaster of the pages and telling them which one doesn't work.

Resolution

If the pages do belong to you, then ensure that all the links point to files which definitely exist, checking the spelling of the filename including capitals and file extension (*.htm is different to *.html)

2.

A page I use all the time doesn't seem to exist any more

Goto the top

Reason

Like the last problem, this is a fault which you have no control over, unless the pages are owned and written by you.  This error occurs when pages have been deleted from the Web Server, possibly because they are just about to be updated or they are erroneous. There could also be a fault with the server that the pages are coming from - it could have crashed or be in the middle of a reboot for example.

Resolution

There is no real resolution for this, apart from ensuring that you are using the correct address and to keep reloading the pages.

3.

A page I am trying to access is asking for a username and password

Goto the top

Reason

You are trying to access a restricted part of a website.  If you have permission to use this part, and have been given a username and/or password, then type the details into the box and click on OK.  If you do not have permission to use this part, or do not have your username and/or password, then you will be unable to access the pages.

Resolution

If you are supposed to have permission to the protected part of the website, mail the webmaster of the site informing them you are having problems gaining access.  They will be able to help you further.

4.

A page I am accessing comes up with "JavaScript" errors

Goto the top

Reason

There are three main reasons for this problem: If the JavaScript is written to a fairly new standard, and you are using an old browser, such as Netscape Navigator 2.0 then the old browser will not support the new standards and think that there is an error instead.  Or, sometimes, the browser can warn of errors when none exist, because the temporary file cache is full.  Lastly, it could actually be a problem with the way the JavaScript has been written, which unfortunately the end user (the person browsing) has no real control over, short of mailing the person who wrote the pages and informing them.

Resolution

Ensure you are using the latest version of your browser software.  If you are not, you may find it beneficial to download the latest version from the manufacturer's website, such as www.microsoft.com or www.netscape.com. You could also try deleting the temporary internet files (also known as the cache).  If this does not make any difference, then the problem is with the server.  Try accessing the page later on to see if the problem has been resolved.

5.

When trying to access a page I get a blank screen and at the bottom I get the message "document: done"

Goto the top

Reason

You may also get the error message "document contains no data".  This normally happens when an error has occured recieving the pages from the server.  This could be because of a bad connection to the server, or because of a server error.  It could also be because the temporary file cache is full or corrupt.

Resolution

Firstly hold down shift and click on reload.  This forces the browser to download a new copy of the pages from the server.  If this does not help, try deleting the temporary internet files.  Try accessing the page later on if it still will not load.

6.

How do I choose what part of Communicator loads first when I start Netscape?

Goto the top

Reason

You can specify which part of the Netscape package actually loads first when you double click on the Communicator icon, such as Navigator or Messenger.

Resolution

To choose which one loads first, open either Navigator or Messenger, and choose Edit -> Preferences, and choose the Appearance option. On the right hand side of the screen you will see some tick boxes. Put a tick in whichever one you want to load first.
